Embassy Stomp
Bert Ambrose
Benjamin Baruch Ambrose (September 15, 1896 – June 11, 1971), known professionally as Ambrose or Bert Ambrose, was an English violinist and bandleader and violinist.
He was born in the East End of London into a jewish wool merchant family. At age five, he was picking up the violin.
During his childhood, his family moved to the U.S. where he find success as musician and musical director.
In the 1920s and 1930s he mainly played at the Embassy Club or at the May Fair Hotel in London.
In August 1928, the BBC began remote broadcasts from the Mayfair ballroom and the band emerged as one of the most popular in all of Britain.
From 1938 until the outbreak of World War II, Ambrose worked at the Cafe de Paris. There he discovered singer Vera Lynn. In late 1939 the band went back to work at the Mayfair, but by the spring 1940, most of its key instrumentalists had been inducted into the military.
After the war, Ambrose continued touring the clubs until 1956, when he turned to a career in artist management.
