Johnny Dodds recorded this version of “Melancholy” at the beginning of 1938.
The song was composed in 1927 by Bloom Rub, Walter Melrose and Elmer Shoebel.
In that same year, Johnny Dodds (beside other artists) recorded “Melancholy” for the first time and it's interesting to compare those two versions.
Basically, you can hear the history in the music, if you know what I mean.
Melancholy – 1938
Recorded: January 21, 1938
The song is very playful and swinging. Also, Dodds uses more notes to play the melody. Altogether, it's not that melancholic.
Melancholy – 1927
Recorded: April 22, 1927
This version is much more melancholic, bluesy and sluggish.
